I joined the staff of Edgehill in June 2006 having worked for one year at the Inter-Church Centre with the All-Ireland Churches’ Consultative Meeting on Racism (AICCMR). Looking for a place with a shorter title, I have somehow ended up managing the Edgehill Theological College Reconciliation and Integration Partnership Project. Most of my working career has focused on education and learning; I spent seven years in the Marino Institute of Education in Dublin setting up initiatives, researching and writing books (mainly on how to address the needs of young people for whom schools could not provide). In Northern Ireland, I ran an alternative educational centre adapting the principles and approaches of Big Picture Schools. I currently chair the AICCMR as well as EMBRACE, a voluntary group of Christians from across the denominations who are serving the Church to make Northern Ireland a more welcoming place for migrants and people seeking asylum.

I teach the Reconciliation Studies module for undergraduate and masters students, co-ordinate the Exploring Theology course with colleagues in Mater Dei and Dromantine, work with inter-church groups, young offenders, para-military folks and minority ethic communities. The main focus is to create opportunities for relationship between people who would not otherwise or ordinarily meet in ways that ‘humanise the other’. I like using what are usually described as creative approaches, and most of the work is carried out on a team or partnership basis.

Hilary and I have two young children who rarely cease and never cease to amaze. When not doing that for which I am gainfully employed, I take time to play ice hockey and squash, write for some short films and television series, play pinochle and travel.
