From September 2011 Edgehill Theological College will form a partnership with St John’s Nottingham. As a ‘hub’ for St John’s, Edgehill will support students who wish to take St John’s distance-learning courses. These include the St John’s Foundation Degree and BA in Theology for Ministry which are awarded by the University of Chester, their validating body.
St John’s College Nottingham is a theological college in the Anglican Evangelical tradition that offers a variety of residential and distance learning courses.  A number of our part-time students have already studied through St John’s courses and, from September, most of our ministry students will be enrolled on their Foundation Degree and BA course. We also hope, through our partnership, to offer opportunities for others (for example, lay pastors and local preachers) to take advantage of these courses.
The Governors and staff of Edgehill Theological College see this as a positive and exciting development and believe that students and the wider church will benefit from it.
The Foundation Degree and BA in Theology for Ministry have as a chief aim the development of reflective practitioners: people who prayerfully bring together the practice of ministry and the resources of theology in the increasingly complex situations where they work. This fits very closely with the vision for training that we have been developing at Edgehill for several years.
The St John’s courses are made up of a number of modules, covering areas of Christian ministry and theological understanding. Students can either enrol for the degree course or for a non-accredited version. They can be either part-time or full-time students.

Foundation Degree and BA in Theology for Ministry

A Foundation Degree has a vocational character and prepares people for practical skills as well as developing their knowledge and understanding. It can be completed through two years full-time study or a longer period of part-time study. It is possible to exit the programme with a Certificate after completing the equivalent of only one year’s full-time study. To acquire an honours degree (BA) students need to complete the equivalent of a further year’s full-time study on top of the Foundation Degree.

The Syllabus
Each stage of the St. John’s distance learning course is planned as a two year part-time study programme, though it is possible to compete a stage in one year (equivalent to full-time study) or to take longer over each stage if necessary. The curriculum includes both core and elective modules.

Assessment
Assessment is by a series of written assignments. Each person chooses their own pathway through the course. For full details of modules speak to a member of staff in Edgehill or see the St John’s website (www.stjohns-nottm.ac.uk). The course is designed to be taught mostly by distance learning, with tutorial support. Edgehill are also offering weekly tutorial support for a number of the modules (details below). Alongside distance learning and the weekly tutorial sessions, special week-long courses in particular areas will also be arranged. Throughout the course each student will have a pastoral tutor who is one of the Edgehill staff, experienced in training full-time and part-time students for a variety of roles both in and outside the Church.

Certificate in Christian Studies

This certificate is awarded by St John’s, but is not itself a university qualification. Like the Foundation Degree, it is intended for those who wish to develop their learning in order to enhance their Christian service and it aims to develop personal reflection and ministry skills as well as Christian knowledge. It represents a more flexible and less expensive alternative to the university-validated courses. It is made up of a number of modules, grouped into different categories (for example, biblical studies). To receive the Certificate, students need successfully to have completed six modules plus a study week (or optional extra module) and for a ‘rounded’ experience it is advised to choose an even spread of modules.

During the academic year 2011-2012 tutorial support will be arranged by Edgehill staff for the following St John’s modules:

New Testament Introduction

Old Testament Introduction

Living Theology

The Creeds – Their Making and Meaning

Ministry and Mission in the Local Church

Christian Worship
