Manuscript archives

The MHSI archive holds original John and Charles Wesley manuscript letters and poetry as well as diaries, journals and letters of early Irish Methodist preachers.

The archive is also a major resource for social and family historians with major collections of Irish Circuit and Society records, including marriage and baptismal registers.

This collection is being added to continually as contemporary collections of correspondence, photographs and other illustrative material is received from individuals and Church departments.

Library

Among the thousands of printed volumes are the early Dublin printed editions of Charles Wesley’s hymns, John Wesley’s journals and letters, as well as a complete set of Wesley’s Christian Library.

The library also holds complete sets and card indexes of Irish Methodist periodicals including the Dublin printed edition of the Methodist Magazine (1802-1822), the Primitive Wesleyan Methodist Magazine (1823-78), and the Irish Evangelist (1859-1883). The long-running Christian Evangelist (1883-1971) is a resource for historians of the late 19th and early 20th century debates surrounding Home Rule and the Ulster Covenant.

Clergy Records

The MHSI library maintains a database of Methodist ministers who have served in Ireland from the late eighteenth century to the present.
