ODE TO SPELL CHECKERS

I have a spelling checker
I disk covered four my PC.
It plane lee marks four my revue
Miss steaks aye can knot see.

Eye ran this poem threw it.
Your sure real glad two no.
Its very polished in its weigh,
My checker tolled me sew.

A checker is a blessing.
It freeze yew lodes of thyme.
It helps me right awl stiles two reed,
And aides me when aye rime.

Each frays comes posed up on my screen
Eye trussed too bee a joule.
The checker pours o'er every word
To cheque sum spelling rule.

Bee fore wee rote with checkers
Hour spelling was inn deck line,
Butt now when wee dew have a laps,
Wee are not maid too wine.

And now bee cause my spelling
Is checked with such grate flare,
There are know faults in awl this peace,
Of nun eye am a wear.

To rite with care is quite a feet
Of witch won should be proud,
And wee mussed dew the best wee can,
Sew flaws are knot aloud.

That's why eye brake in two averse
Cuz Eye dew want too please.
Sow glad eye yam that aye did bye
This soft wear four pea seas.

Keeping You Up to Date

It's been a while since anyone posted here, so I thought I'd add a few photos with a bit of news from the College, especially since it seems that most of the photographs on this blog have disappeared since our server was updated...

David Turtle and Nick McKnight were sent out from Edgehill to the scary world of ministerdom in July - David's in Ballynahinch and Nick's in the Ards Peninsula. Also departing from the College were fulltime students Mr. Spence, Ms. Dorrian, Mr. McCann and Mr. Storbeck - although now I've typed that list I'm sure I've missed someone out: feel free to add a comment to this post to let me know who!

Stephen Hill left the College in the Autumn, after five years of sterling service as Administrator. We wish him well.

And Colin Milligan became a Daddy at the start of term!

The following post is composed from excerpts from remarks made by the outgoing student chair after the Edgehill End of Year Service and placed here by request:

At Edgehill we are encouraged in our biblical studies to use a range of interpretive lenses so that we might have a more rounded appreciation of the text.
Using a similar approach the following is an interpretation what was one of the highlights of the ministerial students’ year – a formation weekend to Dublin’s fair city.
Of course we want to be culturally sensitive in these politically changing times.And in the light of the renewed commitment to peace by the UVF and Red-hand Commando it seemed appropriate to look at our Dublin weekend through the hermeneutic motif of militant loyalism.

Brigadier Clutterbuck and General Boldt commanded the volunteers to be mobilised at 1400 hours for a cross border incursion.
In classically disciplined tradition, around 1530 the two service units left base camp and proceeded towards the border where a separate mission had caused sufficient traffic chaos to allow both detachments to pass across undetected.
The inclusion of two native speakers in the units greatly assisted the mission but one of these was found to be lacking in knowledge of the local terrain resulting in one group having reduced times to consume rations.
General Boldt then gave an opportunity to learn of the local methods of negotiating and trading for arms and drugs, which was coupled with training in intimidation and extortion. A large consignment of pineapple grenades was obtained.
Running throughout the weekend was the usual variety of ambushes from Volunteers McKnight and Hamilton but the most troubling moment of the incursion arose when Volunteer Newell from the Mid-Ulster Battalion went AWOL in Dublin city centre.
General Boldt feared that he may be planning to launch a solo attack (unauthorised by the leadership) on one of the city’s leading tourist attractions which Volunteer Newell had earlier looked on with great admiration due to the magnitude of its wheels.
Thankfully Brigadier Clutterbuck was able to locate, detain and court marshal the offender.

Later in the evening, a phone call seemed to indicate that ‘even the dogs in the street’ were aware of the events of that night. Having left Volunteer Hamilton to spend some of the proceeds of racketeering in one of Dublin’s 5 star hotels the units then returned to the safe territory of Ulster to resume normal operational duties.

As with most hermeneutics – all of that probably makes just a little sense to very few people, so it is possibly better to say that it was a very positive and constructive weekend in which we learned a lot about ministry in situations of mixed culture.

I think it would be fair to say that Richard has felt the pressure of Heather not being around for the past few months – not least the realisation that Nick is going to circuit claiming to be exclusively Clutterbuck material.
So we say a special thank-you to you Richard for all your hard work trying to keep us on track – and we promise we won’t tell Heather how soft you were while she was gone or about your confession about the terrible waste of time that journaling is.

How to write an assignment

Sit in a straight, comfortable chair in a well-lighted place with plenty of freshly sharpened pencils.
Read over the assignment carefully, to make certain you understand it.
Walk down to the vending machines and buy some coffee to help you concentrate.
Stop off at another floor on the way back and visit with your friend from class. If your friend hasn't started the paper yet either, you can both walk to McDonalds and buy a hamburger to help you concentrate. If your friend shows you his paper, typed, double-spaced, and bound in one of those irritating see-through plastic folders, drop him.
When you get back to your room, sit in a straight, comfortable chair in a clean, well-lighted place with plenty of freshly sharpened pencils.
Read over the assignment again to make absolutely certain you understand it.
You know, you haven't written to that kid you met at camp since fourth grade. You'd better write that letter now, that ways you can concentrate.
Go look at your teeth in the bathroom mirror.
Listen to one side of your favorite tape and that's it, I really mean it, as soon as it's over you are going to start that...
~~Listen to the other side.
Rearrange all of your CDs into alphabetical order.
Phone your friend on the other floor and ask if he's started writing yet. Exchange derogatory remarks about your teacher, the course, the university, and the world at large.
Sit in a straight, comfortable chair in a clean, well-lighted place with plenty of freshly sharpened pencils.
Read over the assignment again; roll the words across your tongue; savour its special flavor.
Check the TV Guide to make sure you aren't missing something truly worthwhile on TV (like Monday Night Football). NOTE: When you have a paper due in less than 12 hours, anything on TV from Masterpiece Theater to Sgt. Preston of the Yukon, is truly worthwhile, with these exceptions: a) Pro Bowler's Tour b) Any movie starring Don Ameche.
Catch the last hour of Soul Brother of Kung Fu on channel 26.
Phone your friend on the third floor to see if he was watching. Discuss the finer points of the plot, even if he wasn't watching.
Go look at your tongue in the bathroom mirror.
Look through your roommate's book of pictures from home. Ask who everyone is.
Sit down and do some serious thinking about your plans for the future.
Open your door and check to see if there are any mysterious, trench-coated strangers lurking in the hall.
Sit in a straight, comfortable chair in a clean, well-lighted place with plenty of freshly sharpened pencils.
Read over the assignment one more time, just for the heck of it.
Scoot your chair across the room to the window and watch the sunrise.
Lie face down on the floor and moan.
Leap up and write the assignment.
Type the assignment in your computer. Spell check.
Complain to everyone that you didn't get any sleep because you had to write that stupid assignment.

Ladder matches should be played during Introduction to Theological Thinking, Historical Theology, and Church & Sacrament module classes*.

Don't you just love words?

I especially love words at assignment time. Everyone becomes so much more loquacious as they re-discover a lost love for the magic of Shift+F7. Lies become terminological inexactitudes, dislike becomes antagonism, a game becomes a recreational leisure interest, stealing someone's ideas and using them as a plot for a multi-million bestseller becomes plagarism, and plagarism becomes appropriating the architecture. Gradually the enthrallment with attempting to give the impression that we are more intellectually advanced than reality permits us, permeates into our everyday verbal communication and nobody actually comprehends a single word we utter from our oral cavities!

People also re-discover semi-colons. Nobody ever uses semi-colons except in essays and to draw winking smilies in text messages. And then when we do use semi-colons, it's only because we get bored of commas and a full-stop doesn't fit.

Here Clines is commentating (technically called metacommentating) on the writers of all those wonderful commentarys we have in our library and this is what he says -

An you know what else?? There aint no grown ups, no noise, no formula 1 races and def no Nick McKnight (unless he's hiding in the rolling stacks!!! which he and mister spence... No I'd best not tell you what they did with the rolling stacks the other day!!!!)

Sometime when you're feeling blue, when life seems hard, why not lighten your day by playing "Unnamed Professor Bingo"!!

The rules of Unnamed Professor Bingo are very simple...

Firstly, all contestants must choose in advance 5 favourite catchphrases of said unnamed professor. Catchphrases differ from unnamed professor to unnamed professor, but some sterling examples include "Fascinating", "Just a bit of fun" and "AAAAAAAAAAAAHHHH". These pre-chosen catchphrases are known as the elect.

The contestants write down their catchprases and if the unnamed professor says this catchprase during the course of a class, they stroke them out. If all 5 of the elect are mentioned then the comtestant must shout out "UNNAMED PROFESSOR BINGO!!!", wherin they are declared champion.

Quiet in the Library

How odd it is to find the Edgehill Library in a state of somber study. It's clearly Assignment Season, and to keep myself amused I am trying to use as much colourful vocabulary as possible.

I don't mean swearing, by the way. Brueggemann's not that bad. I mean "Verbose". I'd never heard that word until just the other day. Mr. Paul Grant tells me it means 'wordy'.
So why not just say 'wordy'?

Also, why does Brueggemann take twenty words to say something he could say in five? I don't actually object to phrases like "Disputatious Dialectic", but he's just not the most eloquent writer in the world.

Having made that accusation, you'll have to excuse my rather dull post. I really just logged on to say three things:

When I asked Nick why we had to be so quiet in the library this afternoon, he told me it was because a grown-up had come in.
