FAITH AND WORSHIP
Faith & Worship, described as an exciting and imaginative Christian training programme, integrates Biblical and Theological thought and fosters an appreciation of Christian worship and the development of practical skills in leading worship.
The course therefore incorporates studies in Old Testament, New Testament, Theology and Church History - all in the context of leading people in worship. It is the required course for those training to become Methodist Local Preachers but can also be taken as an enjoyable course of study.
As the recognised training course for Methodist Local Preachers, the course folders are used throughout Britain and Ireland. In Edgehill it is offered as a two-year course, meeting on Thursday evenings. This year (2007/8) Sections C and D will be covered and topics include:
- The Work of Christ
- Preaching Good News
- New Life in Christ
- The Prophets
- The Kingdom of God and the Church
|
Assessment is by assignment and the collation of a worship journal - examinations are no longer a requirement for this course. Students will need copies of the course folders, which have recently been updated (the latest versions are available from No 9 Resource Centre). The cost of the folders for all four Sections, which would cover the full two years of the course, is £93 (including introductory, non-taught materials - £77 without) - or they can be bought separately when required.
The evening classes will include group discussion and study, a time of prayer and the famous Edgehill scones!
When? Thursday evenings @ 7pm, over by 9.30pm
Starts? Thursday 27 September 2007. (2nd term starts 10 Jan 2008)
Course Tutor? Heather Boland
How Much? £100 for the 2007/8 year.
It is possible for those with financial difficulties to pay for their course in instalments.
No 9 Resource Centre, the bookshop at Edgehill, will be available for opening each evening.

Want to become a Local Preacher?
Members of the Methodist Church are encouraged to examine whether they have a call to preach - if you think this might be you, then the Faith & Worship class will prove especially helpful. You can conduct your study on your own with a recognised local tutor, but many people have benefitted from the friendship and encouragement of fellow classmates.
Talk to your minister about being put forward as a Local Preacher 'on trial' at the next Quarterly Meeting / Circuit Executive - if accepted, the Circuit will bear the cost of your folders and should involve you in leading services of worship during your period of study.
People who feel they have a calling to be Methodist ministers are normally required to have 'tested the water' by completing the Faith & Worship course and becoming fully accredited Local Preachers. The qualification is also desirable for most lay pastoral jobs offered by many congregations around Ireland. |
