Which course?
BD and BTh (Single Honours in Theology) The Bachelor of Divinity (BD) and single honours Bachelor of Theology (BTh) are the most popular courses at Edgehill. The difference between these is that Greek and Hebrew language studies are compulsory for the BD but optional for the BTh.
The main areas of study are: Old Testament, New Testament, Church History, Christian Thought, Practical Theology, Hebrew Language and Greek Language.
In the first year, students will take five theology modules (introducing the main areas of study) plus a language (normally Elementary Greek) or an Arts module. In the remaining two years, studentscomplete a further 12 modules at level 2 or 3. Some modules are compulsory and others are chosen from a list of more specialised options in the various areas of study. To see an example of modules at level 2 or 3 you can contact the College and request a Handbook.
BTh (Major Honours in Theology)
Edgehill students can also enrol for a BTh(Major honours) - where theology modules form the major component of a degree along with another minor subject within the Faculty of Humanities. The normal split is 12 theology modules and 6 modules in another subject.
BA (Joint Honours in Theology)
Alternatively, a student can opt for a BA (Joint honours) degree in which theology modules comprise half of a joint degree along with another subject within the Faculty of Humanities, thus taking 9 theology modules and 9 modules from the other subject. A full list of the available subject combinations is available in the University Calendar.
Students not registered through the Institute of Theology, and registered with the Faculty of Humanities can take Theology as a minor subject. This means that they take 6 theology modules out of the total of 18 required for the degree. It is also possible for Humanities' students to take individual theology modules within their degree.
Note: All Queen's University full-time degree courses in theology normally last three years. Almost all of the daytime courses are offered on a part-time basis, and part-time students are entitled to the same facilities as full-time students.
Diploma in Theology
A Diploma in Theology is also awarded by the Institute. This involves taking a total of ten theology modules over a two-year period - 4 in the first year, and 6 in the second year.
